Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Western Bank of Scotland was established in 1832 with an initial paid up capital of £210,000. Between 1832 and 1857 it opened 101 branches and sub-branches throughout Scotland. It acquired the following businesses: Greenock Banking Co in 1843 , Dundee Union Bank in 1844 , and Paisley Commercial Bank and the Ayrshire Banking Co in 1845 . It collapsed in 1857 as the result of a combination of trade recession and bad management. Many of its branches were then taken over by other banks.
