Mines of Memory oral history collection, 2008-2009

Scope and Content

This oral history collection comprises 24 interviews with retired coal miners of North West Leicestershire. Interviews were conducted between April 2008 and March 2009 by Colin Hyde. Subjects covered include work at the coal face, work with particular machines, surveying, work in the stores, the engine shed, the canteen, office work, work culture, relations with management, strikes, and mining galas.

Administrative / Biographical History

Interviews were commissioned by Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville to record how workers at Snibston and Whitwick collieries remembered their work. A CD and audio trail was created and the information gathered was added to the extensive mining memorabilia at Snibston. Snibston Museum closed in 2016.
