Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
John Robert Taylor began a printing business in Risca, Monmouthshire, in 1870. This was taken over in 1878 by his assistant Thomas Yendall ([1855]-1916), becoming a family limited company in 1911. He was eventually succeeded by his sons Tom Edward (Ted) Yendall (d. 1961) and Ralph Yendall (d. 1953) and then by Ted's son, Jack Yendall. In 1925 the company began the manufacture of 'Riscatype' and in 1935 abandoned printing for typefounding. The Starling Press had been founded in Risca in 1946 by C. J. Starling and became a limited company in 1951. It was taken over by Yendall & Co. in 1958. In 1984 Yendall & Co. went into voluntary liquidation while the Staring Press was bought by a group of former employees. F. E. A. Yates was Director of Yendall & Co., 1961-1984, and Managing Director and Publisher-in-Chief of the Starling Press, 1963-1984. Yendall & Co. began publication of the weekly Risca and Crosskeys Advertiser in 1923, with publication continuing until 1934. It was taken over by the Risca Printing Works, 1934-1939, and by the Starling Press, 1951-1960. It became the Risca and Blackwood Advertiser in 1960 and ceased publication in 1971. The Starling Press produced local history publications, 1969-1984.
