Scope and Content

Minutes of weekly meetings, noting topics of debate and list of members, 27 May 1836 - 12 Sept. 1837.

Administrative / Biographical History

The first meeting of the Literary Debating Society was held on the 27 May 1836 in Mr Straith's School Room, Aberdeen. Its aim was to stimulate discussion of all subjects of a literary and scientific nature ... it being expressly understood that no theological or political subjects are to be admitted (ref. GB 231 MS 0518). Meetings were held weekly, each member taking his turn to read an essay, which would afterwards be discussed by the group. Little more is known of the Society, though by the later nineteenth century an Aberdeen University Literary Society was well established in the city. It is not known if there is a relationship between the two.
