Administrative / Biographical History

Donald James Allan, son of JB Allan of Tunbridge Wells, was born 22 December 1907. He was educated at Christ's Hospital and Christ Church, Oxford (1926-1930), where he held a College scholarship, the Craven Scholarship in 1927, the Hertford Scholarship in 1928 and a Craven Fellowship in 1930. He attained a 1st in Classical Moderations in 1928 and a 1st in Litterae Humaniores (Greats, Classics) and BA in 1930, MA 1933. He was a Fellow and Tutor of Classics at Balliol College 1931-1947, serving in the Foreign Office 1940-1945. He became a Reader in Ancient Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in 1948, was made a Fellow of the British Academy in 1955, and became Professor of Greek at Glasgow University in 1957. He died in 1978.
