Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Robert Wight was born in Scotland and for a number of years was Director of Physical Education at the University of Leicester. His particular interest was hammer throwing but he was heavily involved in all aspects of athletics. Internal evidence suggests that Wight attended the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, collecting newspaper reports and taking slide images during the meeting. He became President of the Commission pour l'Etude du Sport Universitaire during the early 1970s and received the Diploma d'Onore of the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire for his work at the World Student Games, c 1973. He was elected Vice-President of the British Physical Education Association, c 1976, and shortly afterwards became a Fellow of that organisation. He was made a life Vice-President of Leicestershire and Rutland AAA at the club's 46th annual meeting.
Wight was also a prolific author of articles concerning athletics. Many articles were published during the 1960s in the following sporting journals: Top Level Sport in Universities; The Physical Education Yearbook; Outdoors; Hermes; FISU Bulletin; Sport in the World of Technology; Traguardi; Journal of Physical Education; UPEA Bulletin; University Sport in a Changing World.
