Scope and Content

A collection of verses and melodies by "Isallt", mainly in Welsh and undated, although there are a few exceptions. A few are printed or photocopies of manuscripts and a number are compositions for harp. There are also letters as well as a fish and fly book with graphic drawings (labelled) of fishing flies, 1908.

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Robert Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merionethshire, born in 1839, was a physician, a poet, a musician and a fisherman.

Also known by his bardic name "Isallt", he composed numerous melodies and poems, taking a particular interest in the strict Welsh meter known as Cynghanedd. He was a keen supporter of the Eisteddfod and in the 1898 National Eisteddfod he served as the chairman of the Music Committee.

Apart from his eminence as a physician, he was also an active public figure. He died in 1914.

Arrangement

There is no apparent system of arrangement. The papers were received at separate occasions and have been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts
