This collection of papers of Frederick John Shirley Tanner contains material on the National Minority Movement (1928-1931), London Industrial Council, Meerut prisoner's case & T.U.C. and the General Strike, (1926-1933), Friends of Soviet Russia, London Engineering Joint Trades Committee, A.E.U. & E.T.U., (1919-1930), Metal workers, Syndicalism & conferences (1920-1921) and National Metalworkers' Minority Movement, Second Congress of the Communist International Report, Industrial Workers of the World & anti-militarism etc., (1909-1941).

Frederick John Shirley (Jack) Tanner was born in Kent on 28 April 1889 and died 3 March 1965. A lifelong trade unionist, in 1912 Tanner joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, which later became the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU). He had an interest in syndicalism and in 1913 he chaired the first International Syndicalist Congress in London and attended the Second Congress of the Communist International in 1915. Tanner became the president of the AEU in 1939 and was president after many re-elections until 1954. (Source: Oxford DNB)
