Scope and Content

Records of Grant & Maddison’s Union Banking Company relating to its establishment and operation, and takeover by Lloyds Bank, including:

  • Establishment (1888-1890): articles of association, assets book;
  • Operation (1888-1903): annual reports, profit & loss accounts, register of members, salary ledgers, papers relating to possible takeovers by Barclays Bank and Wilts & Dorset Banking Company;
  • Amalgamation (1902-1908): amalgamation agreements and related correspondence.

Administrative / Biographical History

This joint stock bank was formed in 1888 through the amalgamation of Maddison, Atherley & Co. (est. 1869) of Southampton, and Grant, Gilman & Long (est. 1787) of Portsmouth. Initially branches opened in Southampton, Portsmouth High Street and Gosport. The bank went on to open further branches in Commercial Road, Portsmouth (1888), Lyndhurst (1893), North End, Portsmouth (1897) and Avenue, Southampton (1900). Lloyds took over the business in 1903.
