Scope and Content

Over 500 of the manuscripts are in Arabic, but the collection also includes some Armenian, Chinese, Coptic, Greek, Hebrew, Persian, Russian, Sanskrit, Syriac and Turkish material. There are astronomical and mathematical works, including an Arabic version of the Conics of Greek geometer Apollonius of Perga (MS. Marsh 667) dated 1070, and Al Sufi's Book of Fixed Stars containing illustrations of the constellations, as well as historical, literary, medical and philologiocal manuscripts.

Acquisition Information

Marsh's oriental manuscripts, with a few Greek and other volumes, were bequeathed to the Library. They arrived in 1714.

Custodial History

Marsh purchased, through Edward Bernard, 270 of 407 manuscripts formerly belonging to Dutch orientalist Jacob Golius from a sale in Leiden on 16 Oct. 1696. Fourteen manuscripts were puchased from the brothers Cunus, also through Bernard, in 1699; about ten were purchased at around the same time through Dr. Hallifax, and a few others were purchased from the collection left by Dudley Loftus.
