Administrative / Biographical History

In 1968  the Schools Council and the Standing Conference on University Entrance agreed that there was a need to consider the curriculum and examinations of sixth form pupils in England and Wales in relation to university requirements, and set up a Joint Working Party to undertake the study. In particular there was felt to be a need to ensure that pupils retained a broad scope to their study rather than specialise too early which would narrow career options. A second Working Party was set up at the same time to consider non-A-level work in sixth forms, and the relationship of the curriculum to further education, industry and commerce. The activities of the two Working Parties were related, and close contacts were established between them.

By the summer of 1971  the first Working Party began to consider a report which would include its recommendations for future action, focussing on a new sixth-form curriculum structure and examination pattern for pupils age 18+. The completed report was published under the title Preparation for Degree Courses, (London, 1973 ), as Schools Council Working Paper 47.
