Abertillery Urban District Council Records

Records of Abertillery Urban District Council, 1896-1974, and Abertillery Local Board of Health, 1877-1896.

Abertillery Urban District Council (UDC), Monmouthshire, was established under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894 and comprised the parishes of Abertillery and Llanhilleth. The Council comprised a number of councillors and a chairman and superseded Abertillery Local Board. Its responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector. Abertillery UDC was abolished in 1974, becoming part of the new Borough of Blaenau Gwent.
