Administrative / Biographical History

The Weizmann Institute of Science was founded at Rehovot in 1944 to mark the 70th birthday of Dr Chaim Weizmann, scientist and first President of Israel. It succeeded, and absorbed, the Daniel Sieff Research Institute, established ten years earlier. Solly Zuckerman was elected to the Board of Governors of the Institute in April 1959, but rarely - if ever - attended meetings. He did, however, maintain an interest in the Institute and its work, and was a Vice-President of the UK-based Weizmann Institute Foundation until 1972.
