Scope and Content

The collection consists of a series of notebooks / journals written by Hugh Ellis ranging from 1883 to 1931. The earliest item was written during his last year at the college in Bala, whilst others cover his period as a student at Bangor and then his career as a minister at Pennal and Maentwrog, Merionethshire. The notebooks contain, among other things, references to sermons, Welsh poetry and literature, politics, religious meetings and religious revivals, and also contain theological notes. They are of a philosophical nature and full of reflective thoughts rather than a record of events.

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev. Hugh Ellis of Maentwrog, Merionethshire was a grandson of Gweirydd ap Rhys, 1807 - 1889 and brother of Rev. R. Pryse Ellis, Glascoed. He was a dedicated Methodist minister and a great reader as well as a writer. He is the author of five memorial articles on Golyddan which appeared in Cymru, and also the author of the history of Methodism in West Merionethshire, Hanes Methodistiaeth Gorllewin Meirionydd, (Dolgellau, 1928). He attended the Bala College, Merionethshire and the University College of North Wales, Bangor before being received as minister at Pennal, Merionethshire in April 1888. In 1890, he moved to Maentwrog as minister.
