Administrative / Biographical History
Leyshon G. Howells was a student of the Universal Mining School, Derby. The school was conducted by T.A. Southern, who had previously been Her Majesty's Inspector of Mines. The school offered instruction by correspondence for colliery officials and miners, with courses adapted to suit individuals' needs and experience. Students could work at their own pace, taking as long as they liked over lessons.
