Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Joseph Herbert Lister (1858-1929) came to Barmouth, Merionethshire, in about 1883. From 1890 he became a shipowner there, owning the schooners Cariad and Billow Crest and the three-masted schooners Jenny Jones, Consul Kaestner and Royal Lister. These mainly carried slate from Porthmadog, Caernarfonshire, to the rest of Britain and beyond. The Billow Crest was lost in the Outer Hebrides in 1899, and the Consul Kaestner sank off southern Portugal in 1902. The rest of the fleet was sold off by Lister in 1903-4. One of his ships was named after Jenny Jones (1882-1969), daughter of Captain Evan Lewis Jones (1851-1920), Lister's associate. She married Lister in 1907, and they moved to Llwyngwril, Merionethshire.
