Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London, was designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1895 as an opera house. In 1966, after more than 70 years the theatre was forced to close its doors and was scheduled for demolition.
After a public outcry, the interior of the theatre was dismantled and rebuilt during the 1970s on its current site on King's Street in Hammersmith, where it reopened in 1979. The original theatre was located nearby.
