Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Superintendent Constables were appointed in Breconshire in 1840 following Peel's County Police Act 1839 to oversee the activities of the existing parish constables responsible for enforcing the law. It was not until after the County and Borough Police Act 1856 that Breconshire Constabulary was formed. Constables were stationed in Talgarth, Brecon, Crickhowell and Hay-on-Wye. The Breconshire Constabulary was disbanded in 1948 and became part of the Mid-Wales Constabulary, which became Dyfed-Powys Police in 1968.
