Administrative / Biographical History

The Wessex Road Club was formed at a meeting held at Whaddon, Wiltshire on 6 April 1924. Membership was open to any member of the Cyclists' Touring Club and, according to the Club rules of 1925, its main objective was the encouragement of road racing and path racing. The Club also held social events such as an annual dinner. It attracted members from the counties of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. The Club headquarters were in Ringwood, Hampshire and the official meetings of the Club were held largely in various public houses and tea rooms in towns and villages in Wiltshire and Hampshire. The Club was affiliated to the Road Racing Council and the National Cyclists' Union and it also arranged racing events with other clubs, including the Poole Wheelers Cycling Club. The Honorary Secretary of the Club from 1925 was C. Neale of Dorset and the records in this collection are largely in his hand.
