Administrative / Biographical History
The National Eisteddfod of Wales can be traced back to 1176 when it is said that the first Eisteddfod was held, under the auspices of Rhys ap Gruffudd (Lord Rhys of Deheubarth or South Wales), at his castle in Cardigan. Eisteddfod is derived from the Welsh verb 'eistedd' which means 'to sit'. It is a competitive festival held annually during the first full week of August. The festival travels and is held annually, alternating between north and south Wales. By doing so, it is able to attract maximum participation, incorporate new developments, while maintaining itself as a national festival. The Eisteddfod is held in Welsh as the main aim is to nurture and safeguard the language and culture of Wales. In 1988, the National Eisteddfodd was held in Newport, Gwent.
