Health and Social Services Department of Jersey

The Health and Social Services Department's collections includes records dating from the 1740s - 1990s and concerns all aspects of health care within the Island. The collection includes records concerning the administration of and admission to the Jersey General Hospital in the 19th and 20th centuries. The hospital acted as the Island's poor house at this point. The collection also includes records of the maternity hospital and St Saviour's hospital which was the main provider of mental health services during the second half of the 19th and the 20th centuries.

The Health and Social Services department's current responsibilities include the following; the provision of a wide array of hospital services, monitoring and improvement of the quality of all services, the education and development of medical professionals, the provision of a coordinated approach to mental health care, offering free, private and confidential counselling services, the provision of social care and support in the community and influencing and creating conditions which allow people to improve their health

Records concerning individuals which are held within the collection are usually closed to public access for 100 years. Researchers can apply to view closed files and details of application can be given by Jersey Archive.
