Scope and Content

Manuscript school essay by Edmund Chandler concerning T. S. Eliot's poem 'East Coker', dated 7 October 1940.

With accompanying typescript letter dated 8 December 1940 from T. S. Eliot complimenting Chandler on the quality of his essay [written following Chandler's teacher forwarding the essay to T. S. Eliot], and noting that he has made 'a few marginal comments' upon returning Chandler's essay.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Chandler family, originally from Vienna, moved to London in the 1930s to 'escape the Nazis'; Edmund was evacuated to Weston-Super-Mare during the Second World War.
