William Gregory seems to have begun to work for the parish of Hatfield in 1875, and on 1 January 1876 he became parish sexton. He kept a day book in which he recorded details of his work in tending the graves, as well as other details concerning the parish, his interest in bell ringing and his family. The volume gives a considerable amount of detail concerning the burials he performed 1874-1882, although this is written in a kind of shorthand which can be difficult to follow
