Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Royal Commission on the Press was set up in 1974 'to inquire into the factors affecting the maintenance of the independence, diversity and editorial standards of newspapers and periodicals'. In the course of its work, the Commission collected evidence from a wide range of individuals and organisations - political bodies and the advertising industry, as well as the newspaper publishers and trade unions themselves. Because of the cost involved, it was decided not to publish this evidence, but to make a copy available for public inspection at the Public Record Office in London and to deposit copies at various other institutions throughout the country.
