Judicial Greffe of Jersey

The Judicial Greffe collection includes the records of the Jersey Court from 1504 to 2002. The main divisions of the Court included in the collection are: Samedi Division - responsible for managing actions pending before the Royal Court. The division deals with the following areas: Taxing of Costs, Administering the Legal Aid Disbursements Fund, Processing Appeals from the Magistrates, Youth and Petty Debts Courts, Registering Doctors and other professional persons, Registering Deeds Poll, Registering Foreign Judgments, Registering Foreign Maintenance Orders, Conducting Degrevements (Discumberments of Immovable Property), Managing the Electoral College List, Acting as Postal Voting Officer at Public Elections, Acting as Greffier Arbitre (Official Assessor or Arbitrator), Drafting Rules of Court, Holding and investing monies paid into Court, Processing Liquor Licences (issued by the Licensing Assembly), Processing Gambling Licences (issued by the Gambling Licensing Authority) and Preparing Petitions of the Superior Number of the Royal Court to Her Majesty in Council. Cour d'Heritage - deals with cases relating to title to real property, the ownership immoveable property and its division on intestacy, the annullment of hereditary contracts and boundary disputes. Originally held three times a year the court was reduced to two sittings in 1771 and to one in the 1980s. Public Registry - registry of all contracts detailing the transfer of real property in the Island from 1602 to the present day. Probate Division - registration of wills and testaments from 1660 to the present day. Criminal Court and Magistrates Court records.

The Judicial Greffe provides administrative and secretarial support to ensure the effective operation of Jerseys courts. The Greffe provides support to ensure the effective operation of the following courts: Royal Court, which is Jersey's High Court and is presided over by the Bailiff of Jersey Court of Appeal Magistrate's Court Youth Court Petty Debts Court The Judicial Greffe supports a variety of different areas of judicial work, including: intellectual property registrations family law land registration wills Each week, the Royal Court sits on Friday to hear general matters. The name of this court, the Samedi Court, and the name of this department, the Judicial Greffe, reflect the historic roots of Jersey law in Norman French law.
