Frederick Elwyn Jones, Baron Elwyn-Jones of Llanelli and Newham, (1909-1989) was born in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and was educated at Llanelli Grammar School, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Cambridge University. A barrister, he served in the Second World War as Deputy Judge Advocate, 1943-1945. He was a prosecution counsel at the war crimes tribunal at Nuremberg and also took part in many well-known criminal trials. He was Labour MP for Plaistow (later West Ham South), 1945-1974, and served as Attorney-General, 1964-1970, and Lord Chancellor, 1974-1979. He was knighted in 1964, and was created Baron Elwyn-Jones of Llanelli and Newham in 1974. He wrote several books including In My Time: An Autobiography (London, 1983). In 1937, he married Pearl Binder (1904-1990), a writer and artist, and they had a son and two daughters. He died on 4 December 1989 and was buried at Central London Cemetery. Lord Elwyn-Jones' brother was Dr Walter Idris Jones (1900-1971), a distinguished scientist and sportsman.
