Papers of Winifred M. and Maxwell D. Deans

The papers of Winifred Deans (6 boxes) comprise notebooks of lectures on chemistry, natural philosophy, geology, mathematics, geometry, astronomy, and religious instruction, taken whilst studying at the University of Aberdeen, and subsequently, 1919 - 1928. There are also 29 issues of My Magazine, early 20th c; albums of photographs and postcards, c 190? - 1920s and from the period 1937 - 1940, miscellaneous notes on Swedish history and other topics.

The papers of Maxwell D. Deans (5 boxes) comprise school and university certificates, and notes of lectures on political economics, English, history, logic and law taken whilst studying for his MA and LL B at the University of Aberdeen, 1926 - 1931.

Winifred Deans Winifred M. Deans, daughter of Duncan Deans, hosiery buyer and farmer, was born in New Milton, Northamptonshire, on the 9th Oct 1901. She graduated from the University of Aberdeen, MA 1922 and BSc 1923, followed by a period of further study in Cambridge, from where she graduated BA 1925 and MA 1929. In 1925 she was appointed assistant mathematics and physics mistress at the County Secondary School for Girls, Harrow, but returned to Scotland in 1927, where she worked as assistant science editor with Messrs Blackie and Son, Ltd., publishers, Glasgow, until 1945, when she was appointed to the Commonwealth Bureau of Animal Nutrition, at the Rowett Institute, Aberdeen. She remained there until her retirement in 1966, and died on 7 Jun 1990. Her estate, including a small volume of personal papers and many books of local studies interest, was bequeathed to the University of Aberdeen.

Maxwell D. Deans Maxwell D. Deans, brother of Winifred Deans (1901 - 1990), was born in Lymington, Northamptonshire, on the 19 May 1907. After graduating from the University of Aberdeen, MA 1928 and LL B 1931, he began working as a law assistant with A.J. and A. Graham, Glasgow in 1932. In 1941 he joined the Civil Service, working first with the Ministry of Information, and, from 1946 until his retirement in 1969, with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. In his retirement he settled in Edinburgh. An enthusiastic amateur violinist, he was secretary of the Edinburgh Society of Musicians until shortly before his death on 14 Oct 1983.
