Scope and Content

Records of Montgomeryshire County Court, 1817-1824, including court books, 1817-1824; writs of justices, 1821-1822; and court file, 1821-1822.

Administrative / Biographical History

County Courts date back to Saxon times, but were established in their present form by the County Courts Act 1846. They deal mainly with cases relating to minor debt and bankruptcy, and workmen's compensation. In the early 19th century, the Montgomeryshire County Court, dealing with actions of debt for sums of less than £2, sat at Machynlleth and Montgomery alternately.
