Scope and Content

Papers and photographs of the Cundall family (and related families) of Acaster Malbis. The collection includes legal documents, business and personal correspondence, press cuttings and a large selection of family photographs.

Administrative / Biographical History

The first 'official' appearance of the Cundall family in Acaster Malbis is in the 1798 Land Tax records. The family were significantly involved in life in the village. Both Robert and Horatio Cundall donated money to build a new chapel. Horatio lived in Hall Garth, worked as a solicitor in York and was a Churchwarden at Holy Trinity Church.

When a school for poor boys was set up in Acaster Malbis in the early part of the nineteenth century, both a William Cundall and a John Kettlewell subscribed to raise money for the school.

The Cundalls also owned land at Mount Pleasant from at least 1898 until at least 1937. Missionary meetings were held in a barn on the land. They also held land at The Poplars and Robert Henry farmed there in 1898.

The Cundall family had ties with another long-established family in Acaster Malbis - the Kettlewells. Several marriages seem to have taken place between the two families.
