Zuckerman Archive: The Colonial Products Council

The file of correspondence (SZ/CPC/2) is slight and includes: the report of a mission of United Kingdom industrialists to the Caribbean in 1952, Industrial development in Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados and British Guiana, Colonial No. 294, HMSO, 1953; a letter from R.A.E. Galley concerning a symposium on spray residues in crops held in Zurich in July 1955; and an article by Arthur Creech Jones, A colonial policy for today, Tribune, 11 August 1950.

The file of documents (SZ/CPC/3) contains: reports of the Council; memoranda and reports on such commodities as sugar and palm oil and on pesticide spray residues; papers on the work of the Tropical Products Institute and the question of tropical agriculture generally; papers on microbiological research; and a copy of a report of the visit to the West Indies in 1955 of Sir Alexander Todd, Chairman of the Advisory Council on Scientific Policy.

File SZ/CPC/4 consists of monthly reports of the work of the Colonial Products Laboratory for the period December 1954 to March 1957 inclusive.

The Colonial Products Council was established in 1954, integrating the work of its predecessor, the Colonial Products Research Council, with that of the Colonial Products Advisory Bureau. The latter was re-named the Colonial Products Laboratory. The terms of reference of the new Council were to consider how, by the application of research, greater use can be made of Colonial plant and animal products [and] to advise the Secretary of State as to (a) the Colonial raw materials (plant and animal) which are likely to be of value to the manufacture of products required by industry, and (b) the research and development which should be initiated on such products. Solly Zuckerman was a founder member of the Council, which was chaired by the biochemist Sir Charles Dodds.
