Matthew Tilford was appointed to the 60th Regiment of Foot as an Ensign in 1855. He rose through the ranks of the regiment and became Lieutenant Colonel in 1877. According to a wrapper containing the appointments, Tilford was living in Wilford, Nottinghamshire in 1878.
