'The North West Passage and the fate of Sir John Franklin', 104 pages, including extracts from documents and several pages of appendices. The manuscript draws on published sources and is expanded from a lecture given at the Soldier's Institute, Woolwich.

Administrative / Biographical History

James Alexander Browne (1838-1914) was a member of the Royal Artillery Band, 1848-1870. He was Bandmaster of the Royal Horse Artillery Band, 1871-1878, and the South Metropolitan Schools, 1878-1900, and Director of Music at the Royal Court Theatre, 1880-1881. He edited the 'British Musician', 1895-1898, the 'British Bandsman', 1899-1900, and the 'Orchestral Times', 1901 et seq. Browne composed music, and was the author of 'England's artillerymen: an historical narrative of the services of the Royal Artillery' (1865).
