Scope and Content

The series comprises 2 volumes which furnish an account for the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry committee meetings. In effect, the series documents the high-level decision-making processes of the Department as well as activities undertaken in order to satisfy the body's statutory obligations. The earliest minuted meeting extant in the series, 20 Feb 1987, dates from a few months after the Department's creation, which took place on the 22 Dec 1986, and runs through until 8 Aug 1990.

Activities evidenced within the departmental minutes include but are not limited to: the affecting of the shift from the board to the departmental systems of governmental administration; the enforcement of various orders and regulations relating to the agriculture, fishery and forestry industries; the administration and management of various funds and schemes aimed at the promotion and ongoing development of the Island's agriculture, fishery and forestry industries; the submission and approval of various accounts administered by the department; the undertaking of surveys and the submission of reports regarding the state of the Island's agriculture, fishery and forestry industries; and the management of Knockaloe Experimental Farm.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1986, by order of Tynwald, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry replaced the former Board of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Forestry, Mines and Lands Board.

The complete shift from the Boards to departmental systems of governmental administration was fully realised in 1988. In 2010, the core functions of the department were transferred to the newly formed Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.
