Scope and Content

Microfiche copies, [20th century], of abstracts and indices of wills of St Davids Consistory Court (1564-1858), held at National Library of Wales.

Administrative / Biographical History

Until 1858 wills were proved in diocesan Consistory Courts. St Davids Consistory Court had probate jurisdiction over Pembrokeshire, Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, and the deanery of Gower in Glamorgan. The Court proved the wills of testators whose property lay entirely within the diocese; wills relating to two or more dioceses were proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. In 1858, responsibility for proving wills passed to the State.
