Scope and Content

In 1808, Thomas Laws of Sutton, Cambridgeshire, farmer, mortgaged (in the form of a 1,000-year demise) two acres of meadow (part of six acres meadow or 'meadland') in Sutton, to Hugh Robert Evans of Ely, gent (3rd party). Laws died soon after, having named his wife Mary (2nd party) and his son John Laws (late of Sutton, farmer, 1st party) as his executors and instructed them to sell the land and divide the profits between themselves and his daughter Mary. The mortgage has since been repaid, but Evans remains in possession of the lease, having not yet made any assignment. Now, in consideration of #63, John Laws conveys the property to Jonathan Ilett of Earith, Huntingdonshire, gent (7th party) with John Brown jnr of Earith, maltster (5th party) named as Ilett's trustee for the freehold, and Joseph Harris of St Ives, Huntingdonshire, gent (6th party) named as his trustee for the 1,000-year estate, now conveyed by Evans. Mary Laws acknowledges payment of her share, while as purchaser of the larger part of the six acres, Stephen Feary of Sutton, farmer (4th party), agrees to produce specified deeds in his keeping at Ilett's request. Lease (for one year at peppercorn rent) signed and with the mark of John Laws, and witnessed by Thomas M Fisher of St Ives, solicitor, and John Stevens, clerk to Messrs Fetch and Fisher, duty stamps. Release in form of seven-part indenture of 3 pages, signed and sealed by John and Mary Laws (both make marks), Evans, Feary, and Ilett, witnessed by Fisher, Stevens, Thomas Jackson, and Charles Harris, clerk to Mr Harris of St Ives, conveyancer; duty stamps. Release endorsed with John Laws' receipt for consideration money, same date and witnesses.
