Scope and Content

The collection contains certificates, examination papers and notebooks relating to various family members:

Irene Ivy O'Connor (b.1904): a 1922 University College Nottingham group photograph (damaged); University College Nottingham Elementary Training Department certificate 1922-1924 to become a certificated teacher; also papers relating to previous education: University of Oxford school examination certificate 1904; University of London matriculation certificate 1921; University of London General School Examination certificate, stating that she was a pupil of High Pavement Secondary School, Nottingham for 5 years up to 1921. Sheila O'Connor Kuczma of Rock Street, Bulwell (MS 955/2): Music examination papers for 1953, results for Clarendon College Nottingham GCEs 1966; MENSA membership card 1991; letter from surgeon regarding a recent operation, 1972; letter from Horserace Totalisator Board, London regarding her employment, 1966; appointment of Mrs Kuczma to the Home Civil Service as an Assistant Collector of Taxes for the Inland Revenue, 1966; O'level examination results from the Arnold and Carlton College of Further Education, 1967; Letter from the County Courts Branch regarding her position as clerk, 1967 (MS 955/2/1-8); also University of London papers relating to the study of law, 1960s; and notebooks (mostly about law). Wolodymyr Kuczma of Rock Street, Bulwell: certificate for long-standing membership of the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers Union; food hygiene certificate 1967 and Institute of Certified Grocers membership certificate 1962; another certificate in Ukranian[?] stamped by the Association of Ukranian former combatants in Great Britain, 1999. William Conner: Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes certificate of initiation into the Pride of Bulwell, 1926. (MS 955/5)

Other unattributed items (MS 955/6): Cutting from newspaper of an article entitled 'Buried snag in treasure' by Simon Hoggart, about a brooch found in Manchester by a schoolteacher, Geoffrey Key; page from [American Lutheran] newsletter Hilltop Herald 1955 featuring article 'From the Superintendent's Desk by Martin Gilbertson; various published volumes including mathematics tables, GCE model answers, and 'The Phonographic Teacher' published by Pitman; box containing medal/pin (possibly Masonic/Antediluvian), and coin (possibly phonography); notebook with sketches of historical dress/outfits/armour; poem about old age.

Administrative / Biographical History

The collection has limited infomation about the family, but presumably Irene Ivy O'Connor, born 6th July 1904, was the mother of Sheila O'Connor, born c.1926. Irene O'Connor was described as of Edgware Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. She attended High Pavement School from 1920-1921. She also attended the Nottingham Pupil Teacher Centre from 1921-1922 and during this time, she gained her teaching experience at Albert Street Infants', Forest Fields Infants' and Scotholme Girls' schools. She qualified from University College Nottingham as a certified teacher in 1924. Sheila married Wolodymyr (Bill) Kuczma, born c.1925, who was originally from Poland, but who was naturalised as a British citizen in 1954. They lived on Rock Street, Bulwell, Nottingham, both dying at the age of 82 in 2008 and 2007.
