Textbook of poetics, including Russian and Polish poetry taught in Kiev Theological College; 1717-1734

Book of Poetics and Rhetoric from the Kiev Mogilyansk Academy in Russia, and later used in the Novi Sad Gymnasium in Servia. Volume is made up of several different manuscripts in various hands, dating from 1717-1734.

Tabulae Praeceptorum Poeseos in Parnasso Kiiowomohilaeano Traditae atque ad usum Roxolanae iuventuti p[er] Capita & Puncta Explicatae ex anno Repardonis nostra 1729: in annum 1730: Neovatibus Representatae Sub Reverendissimo Patre Barnaba Starzycki

A course of poetry delivered in the Kiev Mohyla Academy in 1729-1730. A copy of the same text on 138 folios (but without the attribution to Starzycki) is held in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine (Kiev), class mark 321 П/ 109, see Vitalii Masliuk, Latynomovni poetyky i retoryky XVII– pershoï polovyny XVIII stolittia ta ïkh rol’ u rozvytku teoriï literatury na Ukraïni (Kiev, 1983), p. 228.

Latin text from the beginning followed by (A) exercises in Russian and Latin.

Ornamental title page: water-colour with classical figures. [Class mark?] in red in the top right corner: ‘XVIII 981’. Presentation inscription on verso: ‘Bibliothecae Serbici Gymnasii Neoplatensis offert Magarashcevich Historiarum ibid Professor’.

Neoplanta = Novi Sad in Serbia

Georgije Magarašević (1793-1830, d. in Novi Sad, of consumption), Serbian writer, historian, editor and publisher, dramatist, translator and collector of folk proverbs. Educated in the Gymnasium and Theological College of Sremski Karlovci, he was known for his abiding love of classical authors. In 1817 he became professor of history, literature and philosophy at the Novi Sad Gymnasium.

[PART TWO]

(B) A course of rhetoric written in 1716, followed by (C – verso) exercises in Russian: samples of homilies on two significant dates of religious calendar: Ascension of Jesus Christ and Assumption of the Virgin. Date in the end 15 August 1734.

Ms in 2o. Simple brown leather binding over cardboard with very small geometric ornament along the edges and on the spine. Ms could have been cut to size during re-binding, but the block was not re-sewn.
