Scope and Content

The original manuscript, probably autograph, of an unpublished early 19th century comedy. The identity of the author is unknown.

The play features characters such as Lord Montrose, Sir Charles Lumley, Dr Dabble, Lady Julia de Crespigny and the Abbess of St. Agnes. The plot is about love and the play ends with a double marriage. It is set in Brussels.

The manuscript is probably a fair copy by the author him or herself. There are some original corrections. There are also many cuts and alterations to the text in another hand. These are in pencil, mainly at the beginning and the end and probably date from later in the 19th century.

The early leaves in the volume are watermarked 'GA 1818', but the later part has paper watermarked 'J. Gye & Co. 1822'. This company could be related to 'H. Gye, Bath, Stationer' who filed for bankruptcy in 1825.
