Scope and Content

These papers primarily consist of press cuttings and related material relating to the work of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies from its origins in the early 1960s to its subsequent work in the 1970s and 1980s. The material was collected by the Centre and salvaged from the CCCS after its closure in 2002. Papers largely comprise press cuttings which include reviews of books or articles written by current or former members of the Centre, and of CCCS publications, as well as reviews written by members of CCCS staff and published in newspapers and journals. Other cuttings contain news about the activities of members of CCCS staff, particularly their appearances on television and radio, and there are a small number of cuttings that contain news about former students at the Centre. There are a few cuttings dating from the 1980s that do not appear to have a direct connection with CCCS staff or students but which may have been kept for teaching purposes.

The papers also include a file containing copies of articles and reviews by Stuart Hall dating from 1959 to 1971, as well as press cuttings reporting on his radio and television broadcasts. The file contains a large number of typescript annotated draft articles, reviews and broadcasts, the majority of which are drafts of book reviews for various newspapers and journals, with the addition of some non-review articles
