Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Hale Lewin family's history was dominated for many years by military service. Wilfred Hale Lewin (born 1856) was a professional soldier who served in British India. His son, Richard Alston Hale Lewin (1891-1967) was also a professional soldier, who served in both world wars. Richard Lewin was the son of Wilfred Hale Lewin and his second wife, Ella. Richard Lewin and his wife Vivian (nee Thomson, 1891-1973) had two sons. Their elder son Antony Lewin (1919-1944) was a RAF pilot who was killed on active service in the Second World War. Antony's brother Ian married Agathe von Koch, a Swedish national, in 1950. Agathe von Koch was the daughter of Eva and Ragnar von Koch. The Hale Lewins had already married into von Koch family, albeit in the previous century. Frances von Koch (nee Lewin) was writing home to her family from Stockholm in the 1830s. The Swedish connection helps explain the friendship between the Hale Lewin family and Jenny Lind, one of the most celebrated singers of the nineteenth century. Jenny Lind, a Swede, lived in London for a number of years.
