The collection consists of reports and monographs on the location, construction and administration of hospitals in Northern Ireland covering the period 1948 to 1974. Items include reports from The Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority, Hospital Management Committees, research organisations and central government. The archive constitutes the nucleus of the Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority library which passed to The Queen's University of Belfast at the Authority's demise in 1973. Queens University Medical Library continues to maintain an archive of material related to health and social services provision in Northern Ireland.

Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Authority was established on creation of the National Health Service in 1948 , charged with responsibility for hospital services and replacing the previously independently administered voluntary hospitals.Its remit included hospitals planning, building and administration. The Authority ceased to exist when local authority reorganisation integrated hospital, health and social services under common administrative arrangements.

Appraisal Information
The collection provides a unique record of the development of hospital and health services in Northern Ireland post NHS inception up to and including hospital and health services reorganisation in 1973.
Custodial History
Assembled as the core of an active library serving and maintained by The Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority, the collection was donated to The Queen's University of Belfast when The Authority was disbanded in 1973. The stock remained active for a further year after which it was closed and consigned to store. Thereafter, a library service was supplied to health service staff from Queen's University Medical Library by arrangement with the Northern Ireland Department of Health and Social Services.
