Scope and Content

This collection contains newscuttings from the 'Daily Chronicle', 'First Aid', 'The Graphic', 'The Nursing Record and Hospital World' and others about nursing during the Graeco-Turkish War, belonged to George Granville Leveson Gower, 3rd Earl Granville, member of the British Legation to Athens in 1897. The articles are glued onto numbered sheets of paper. Pages marked 3-20 and 27-34, and three sets of double-sided pages bound together without numbering, have been ripped from a large bound volume. The articles include a description of a group of English nurses led by Mrs Ethel Fenwick travelling to Greece and establishing a Military Hospital in Athens to aid in nursing the war wounded and to train Greek nurses. Fundraising for the service went by the title of 'The National Greek Ambulance Fund'. The hospital is also referred to as the Ecole Militaire.
