Thomas Martin Lowry : Scientific correspondence

This material is held atCambridge University Library

Scope and Content

The letters and papers catalogued below mostly originated during Lowry's Cambridge years. They cover a variety of topics, but the largest group relates to Lowry's disagreements with Professors C.K. Ingold and J.F. Thorpe on the subject of mutarotation, concerning which he believed not only that their arguments and conclusions were wrong, but that they had 'grossly misrepresented' his own views. The correspondents found here include many of the most influential chemists and physicists of the first half of the twentieth century; but there are few runs of correspondence (the longest being nineteen letters between Lowry and Professor Arthur Lapworth of Manchester). This material constitutes the only group of T.M. Lowry's papers known to have survived. It was presented to the University Library in 1988 by Dr. H.G. Holland.
