McLaren, Jeens and Seacome MSS

Papers of the firm of McLaren, Jeens and Seacome, 1730-1900, comprising deeds, 1730-1854, relating to properties in Llangattock-Vibon-Avel, 1730-1851, Llanvihangel-Ystern-Llewern, 1803-1848, Trevethin, 1830-1846, Abergavenny, 1760-1839, and elsewhere in Monmouthshire, and in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, 1839-1854; legal papers, correspondence, and deeds relating to the case of Nurse v. GWR in the parish of Llanhilleth, 1849-1900.

Messrs McLaren, Jeens and Seacome (previously McLaren & Jeens) was a firm of solicitors based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The Newcastle estate was located mainly in Llangattock-Vibon-Avel, Monmouthshire. In the late 19th century the Great Western Railway Co. compulsorily purchased land in Llanhilleth, Monmouthshire, from Mrs Rosa Nurse in order to widen their railway from Bassaleg to Llanhilleth. Mrs Nurse disputed the compensation on offer and was awarded £3,959 by an umpire in 1899.
