The Public Health Act of 1848 led to this board being set up. It covered Banbury District, which consisted of Banbury Borough, Neithrop and Grimsbury, and had 12 members (6 chosen by the borough and 6 by Neithrop and Grimsbury). The board was responsible for paving, lighting and sewerage, and all sanitary matters. A surveyor of the highways and inspector of nuisances were appointed in 1852 and a medical officer in 1873. The board was empowered to levy rates to meet its expenditure.
Banbury Board of Health was disbanded in 1888 and its duties passed to Banbury Town Council
This collection was box 78 in the Stockton & Fortescue solicitors' collection, which was received in the office in March 1959 (accession 344) and January 1980 (accession 1707). For minute books of the board, 1856-1868, see the Banbury Borough collection (reference BOR2/11/1/A1/1-8).
