Scope and Content

This oral history collection comprises of 59 interviews and one personal recording. They mainly cover the Maternity, Infant Welfare and Birth Control Services in Leicester, from the early twentieth century to the beginning of the National Health Service in 1948.

Administrative / Biographical History

Interviews were recorded by Shirley Aucott. Some were recorded as research for a Master of Philosophy degree at the University of Leicester. She later wrote a book, Mothercraft and Maternity: Leicester's Maternity and Infant Welfare Services, 1900 to 1948 (Leicester: Leicestershire Museums, Arts & Records Service, 1997), in which she used these oral history interviews.
