Scope and Content

The collection has been divided into five sections under the following headings : essays and articles, poetry, sermons, correspondence and miscellaneous items. The essays include the histories of the parish of Llanarmon-yn-Ial, Denbighshire and of the Calvinistic Methodist cause in various areas of Wales and Birmingham. Also included is a biography of the Rev. John Lewis, Birmingham, 1822-1871. There are cuttings of articles taken from the Goleuad and other journals. Under poetry, there are volumes and loose pages of the poetry of Humphrey Jones Davies. The sermons are grouped into Welsh sermons and English sermons. The letters are from a variety of correspondents, including E. Tegla Davies and Sir Ifor Williams.

The miscellaneous section includes poems written to Sir Ifor Williams on the occasion of his wedding; a copy of the marriage certificate of Thomas Jones, Plas Kynaston, Rhiwabon, Denbighshire and Elizabeth Jane Tudor of Pentre Dwr, Llangollen, Denbighshire; a Sunday School account book of Hockley Hill chapel, Birmingham; a rent book of houses belonging to Misses M. and C. Edwards, Penybont, near Bala, 1897 - 1902.

Administrative / Biographical History

Humphrey Jones Davies was born in 1877 and served as a minister for several Calvanistic Methodist churches, namely, Seion in Llanrwst, Denbighshire; Pen-y-groes in Tregarth; Hermon in Mynydd Llandegai, Caernarfonshire; Hockely Hill in Birmingham and Bath Road in Wolverhampton. He was a contributor to the Goleuad and other journals of a similar religious nature, in particular the Seren of Bala, Merionethshire. He died on 9 July 1966

The papers of the Rev. Humphrey Jones Davies of Llangollen have been arranged according to type and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts.
