Scope and Content

Volumes of press cuttings primarily from Birmingham newspapers like the Birmingham Daily Post. Four of the volumes contain reports of deaths and obituaries of local and national public figures. Some of the volumes also contain indexes highlighting the people involved. Other volumes contain cuttings on particular subjects such as public institutions including Birmingham University, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Midland Institute lectures, sales of works of art and cuttings related to music.

Whilst the volumes primarily focus on events and public figures within Birmingham and the West Midlands, national and international news is also covered such as the Tay Bridge disaster in Scotland in 1879, the Revolution in Brazil in 1889 and the Assassination of USA President William McKinley in 1901.

Some of the volumes, also contain loose clippings and blank pages.

Administrative / Biographical History

Book labels in some of the volumes indicate they were compiled by Stephen Samuel Stratton of Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, a Professor of Music.
