Scope and Content

Dictates of the mathematical lectures of John Cruickshank, professor of mathematics, taken down by James Aitken of Marischal College, Aberdeen.

p.i, iii, 1-103 Dictations in the first mathematical class, session 1838-1839.

After two blank pages [iv-v] and title page [vi] there follows a second sequence of pagination (wanting pp.1-98):-

pp.99-404 Dictations in the second mathematical class, session 1839- 1840. Inserted at p.280 and p.318 are sheets of printed geometrical figures. The appendix I (pp.397-399) is a list of students in the second mathematical class with some annotations.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Cruikshank was professor of mathematics, University of Aberdeen, from 1829 to 1860, having been an assistant from 1817 to 1829.

James Aitken was son of John Aitken, seceder minister in Aberdeen, and was a student at Marischal College, Aberdeen from 1837 to 1841.
