Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Port of London Staff Association was founded in 1909, succeeding the recently disbanded London and India Docks Staff Association. It registered as a trade union and became the Port of London Docks and Wharves' Staff Association in 1917. It became the National Union of Docks, Wharves and Shipping Staffs in 1919. The union represented white collar staff in the Port of London, and latterly within docks nationally.
It was a founder member of the Transport and General Workers' Union on 1 January 1922. On joining the TGWU the membership formed the Administrative, Clerical and Supervisory Group.
